Michael Wilbon’s commentary about how the NHL should be “embarrassed” to have the Stanley Cup Playoffs start without Crosby.
This may be the single most stupid one minute and ten second video I have ever seen. (And I’m online A LOT.)
His argument does NOT hold up. “What if —insert star player— wasn’t in his sports’ Playoffs?”
Guess what? If Kobe Bryant rolls his ankle bad enough, HE WON’T PLAY.
If Peyton Manning tears a rotator cuff? HE WON’T PLAY.
And “thuggery”? WTF, Wilbon. It’s not like he was beaten with a bat on his way to the net. He wasn’t even hurt in a fight, or anything like that. He got hurt PLAYING HOCKEY. PLAYING A CONTACT SPORT.
But hey, one star player getting hurt should mean we change the entire way the league is run, right? And so if he comes back and takes a puck to the face, the NHL should ban any shot that leaves the ice, because WE NEED THAT ONE GUY ON THE ICE. THE LEAGUE IS SH*T UNLESS HE’S ON THE ICE!!!
And while we’re at it, how about we put STAR players out there in red “no-touch” jerseys. And the poor sap that hits one of them is OUT OF THE LEAGUE.
I’m amazed at how much this video pissed me off. Everything about it made me mad. The league should be “embarrassed” because a star player got hurt playing the game? Sure, never happened before. Crosby is THE star of the league because people steal his stuff? There’s a convenience store in Morgantown that’s been robbed 8 times in the past year and a half. Not going to call that store a high-profile place.
And am I the only one picking up some real condescension from Mr. Wilbon? Like hockey just isn’t good enough?
